Questions to Ask to Determine God’s Will For Your Life

I have received a lot of questions lately about how to know if God is telling you something. So as I have been thinking through this and how God talks with me, I have started to put a list together of questions I ask myself whenever I feel that God is trying to tell me something. This is not exhaustive by any means but I believe it is a great start.

1 ) Did the Calling or Opportunity begin with God?

-Did this calling come in a time of prayer, Bible study or worship?

-How did you come upon it? Was it revealed in Scripture or did you hear it or see it?

-Write the details down. Note the specifics of what occurred.

2 ) Are you willing to do it?

-God makes us passionate about what He calls us to. Are you passionate about the calling?

-God calls us to things we cannot get away from. Could you leave the calling if wanted to?

3 ) Are you gifted to do it?

-Look into your past, has God been equipping your for the task?

-Do others encourage you when you do the duties of your calling?

4 ) Does the calling conflict with God’s Word in any way?

-God is constant and unchanging. He will not go against His Word. Is it consistent with what you read in Scripture?

5 ) Is God saying anything through James 3:13-18 in regards to your calling?

(James 3:13-18 ESV) Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

6 ) Does this demonstrate the fruit of the Holy Spirit?

(Galatians 5:22-24 ESV) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

7 ) Does God confirm the calling to you through prayer and further study?

-God will often times repeat His will for me through further study. Is He repeating himself to you?

8 ) Do you believe that now is God’s timing to follow through?

-Is God telling you now is the correct time or is it for a future time?

9 ) Are you forcing the call from your own will?

-We must have faith for Him to place us where we He desires us to be. Are you pushing something under the guise of His will?

10 ) Does this decision bring glory to God?
