What I Learned About the Painted Churches Pt.1

Last week, First Baptist Church took a bus trip to the painted churches in Schulenburg, TX. This trip was an all day affair to visit churches that have been around over 100 years and have been maintained by the members of the church.

I know that you are thinking, “What is so special about that?” Well, these churches are hand painted from top to bottom and they are BEAUTIFUL!

But what really had me thinking on this trip was the incredible amount of dedication these church members had for their church!

Let’s face it. In our self serving, immediate gratification based society, we often see church as something that should serve my needs and should be there when I need it. But doesn’t require much dedication or loyalty from me. With this mentality I think we have lost the real reason for church. We have made church about us and not about God. (Acts 2:42-47)

When we were touring these churches I could not stop thinking about how many hours this would have taken. How much sacrifice it would have taken. How much time away from work of family this would have required. How many TV shows or social events would have been missed. (Hebrews 10:24–25)

I believe this reveals something for every person that is member of the church. Church is not about us. It is about our God. It is about serving and sacrificing for Him. It is about living the life He has called us to. It is about being on Mission with Him. (Gal. 2:20)

My hope with the post is that you become encouraged through the witness of these faithful church member’s example and you begin to serve our God in your church with the same self sacrifice and dedication. (Ephesians 4:11–12)

And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.” (Acts 2:42–47, ESV)

And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,” (Ephesians 4:11–12, ESV)

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” (Hebrews 10:24–25, ESV)

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20, ESV)
